US Sets Time Windows for Tankers in Strait of Hormuz

The United States has asked tankers passing through the strategic Strait of Hormuz to sail only during designated windows, when the US military can provide protection. The Financial Times reported this, citing communications from the US Navy's coordination center.

The change follows what the report described as intensified Iranian attacks on vessels traveling through the area at night. Since May, Washington has been providing air cover to ships using the route along Oman's coast, on the southern side of the strait.

In early September, however, the United States shortened the period during which protection is available. Tankers must now use two specific time slots each day during which US forces can provide military cover. The US Navy informed maritime advisors of the arrangement by email, according to available information. The Strait of Hormuz remains a location of heightened security risk for maritime transport.
