Trump Says He Would Love a United Ireland

During his visit to Ireland, Donald Trump openly voiced support for the idea of unifying Ireland with Northern Ireland. After talks with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, he said he would "love" to see such a development and predicted it will eventually happen.

At the same time, he acknowledged that the United Kingdom would have its own position on the issue.

Trump's remarks come shortly after new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said a referendum on Northern Ireland's secession from the United Kingdom is not on the agenda.

Under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, only the British government can call such a vote.

Polls so far show that a majority of Northern Ireland's residents want to remain part of the United Kingdom, although the gap between the two camps has narrowed slightly since Brexit.
