Most German Pastors Use Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has also found its way into the work of German pastors. According to the DiRK 2026 study, approximately 62% of them use it, although the frequency of use varies significantly. One-fifth of pastors work with AI frequently, while another 42.6% use it only occasionally. Conversely, one in five pastors have had no experience with it so far, according to Katholisch.de.

Pastors most frequently use AI for writing texts, as reported by 62.3% of users. This is followed by research at 60.9% and translations at 35.2%. They also use these tools to gather facts, summarize texts, create images and seek inspiration.

The study also suggests that AI is used in writing sermons, though the exact extent is not yet known. More detailed analyses are expected in 2027.

A total of 7,178 Protestants and Catholics participated in the study, with 505 pastors answering questions about generative AI.
