OpenAI Solves Math Problem, Declines Prize Money

OpenAI has announced a purported breakthrough in one of the most difficult problems in modern mathematics. The company claims to have solved the Navier-Stokes problem, for which a million-dollar prize has been offered, according to The Guardian.

Approximately 10,000 autonomous AI agents reportedly worked simultaneously on the calculations, producing the result in less than four days.

According to OpenAI, the proof suggests that the equations describing the motion of fluids can, under certain circumstances, lead to infinite values. The company also said it does not intend to claim the financial reward.

However, this success was overshadowed by a dispute with professor Tristan Buckmaster, who, along with another researcher, had been working on a similar problem. OpenAI reportedly accelerated its efforts after learning of their impending result.

Buckmaster also pointed out that part of their work had been stored in the Codex system. He emphasized, however, that he does not know whether OpenAI actually used this data.
