Anthropic CEO Calls for a Slowdown in AI Development

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wants AI developers to slow down the race to increase model performance on their own. He argues that the pace of technological progress should be deliberately moderated to allow more time to address safety and societal risks.

Amodei presented his proposal in an essay in which he outlined a three-step framework for the future development of AI. "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models", he wrote. At the same time, however, he pointed out that even after such a slowdown, progress will still occur very rapidly.

According to his argument, therefore, the goal is not to halt development but to buy time. Companies, regulators and society should use this time to prepare rules and mechanisms that will help mitigate the potential negative consequences of more powerful AI systems.
