Iran-Oman Deal Falls Short of Reopening Strait

Iran and Oman have reached an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz, but it does not call for the strait's immediate reopening. An Iranian source told the Tasnim news agency that the agreement lays the groundwork that could lead to the eventual resumption of traffic through the strategic waterway.

However, Tehran is linking further developments to its own conditions vis-à-vis the United States. According to the source, the reopening of the strait will depend entirely on whether Washington meets those conditions.

The agreement is also intended to be a step toward Iran asserting its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. For now, therefore, this is not an announcement of an immediate opening but rather the creation of a political framework for such a step.
