Magyar Wants to Lift Restrictions on Adoption by Gay Couples

The new Hungarian government led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar plans to amend the controversial 2020 legislation introduced by Viktor Orban's former cabinet, which effectively banned adoption by same-sex couples. The previous law required that applications from single applicants, the only option available to gay individuals, be personally approved by the minister of family affairs.

Upon taking office, Magyar declared that experts, not politicians, must be the sole decision-makers regarding whether an environment is suitable for a child's happy and harmonious development.

This step represents a key breakthrough for the LGBT community. In addition to blocking adoptions and gender changes on official documents, Orban's government has also imposed bans on LGBT materials in schools, which the Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled violates EU law.
