Russian Drone Strikes Hit Train and Truck near Warsaw

A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw overnight. The strike occurred in the Volyn region, just 2 km from the Polish border. Ukrainian State Railways confirmed that, thanks to an early warning system for drone threats, staff were able to intervene in time, and none of the 206 passengers were injured.

According to RMF24, the train later arrived at the Dorohusk border crossing more than six hours late and, after clearing customs, continued on to the Polish capital. According to official statements, there were no Polish citizens among the passengers.

The Russian military also struck a cargo truck near the Ukrainian-Polish border with a drone.

The incident prompted a swift response from Polish authorities and diplomats. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said Warsaw was treating the situation with the utmost seriousness, while labeling Russia an enemy of the free world.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, speaking directly from Kyiv, said that Putin is "escalating" the situation. Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz warned that Moscow is changing tactics and deploying Geran-5 jet drones in massive waves over western Ukraine, one of which landed just 1 km from Polish territory.

In response to this aerial activity, the Polish military preemptively deployed F-16 fighter jets, helicopters and a SAAB reconnaissance aircraft in the early morning hours. The Operational Command of the Branches of the Armed Forces later confirmed the end of the operation, stating that there had been no violation of Polish airspace.
