The US Lifts Tariffs on Irish Whiskey

At the conclusion of his two-day visit to Ireland, US President Donald Trump made a surprise announcement that he was lifting the 10% US tariffs on Irish whiskey. He made the announcement while presenting the trophy at the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament at his Doonbeg resort. Trump said he had discussed the tariffs with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and the tournament’s winner, Shane Lowry.

Whiskey produced in the Republic of Ireland had previously been subject to a 10% tariff when exported to the United States, while whiskey produced in Northern Ireland and other parts of the United Kingdom was not subject to the tariff.

The Irish Whiskey Association welcomed the announcement and stated that it would continue to work with partners in the EU and the US to restore duty-free trade in all beverages.

During his visit, Trump also reiterated his support for Irish reunification, which he described as one of the most natural things. Martin said the reaction to the president’s remarks was exaggerated. Trump refused to answer a question about the timing of a possible referendum on Irish reunification and also sidestepped a question about Scottish independence.
