Trump Rejects Calls to Slow AI Development

Donald Trump dismissed concerns raised by technology leaders over the weekend about the risks of artificial intelligence and calls to slow its development.

The US president argued that existing regulations and criminal laws give the authorities sufficient powers to keep AI companies in check, warning that doubts about the technology could benefit China.

Trump was responding in particular to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who proposed a three-step framework aimed at pacing AI development to allow more time to manage its risks. The proposal was also backed by Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

AI-related stocks fell sharply worldwide on Monday following the calls from industry leaders to slow the pace of development.

Trump also sharply criticized Amodei, claiming that his administration had already intervened to prevent potentially harmful behavior involving AI and would continue to do so.

The president has largely embraced AI companies during his second term, warning that excessive caution could give China an advantage in the global technology race.
