Top AI Leaders Call for Slower Development

Three prominent technology executives have called for slowing the pace of artificial intelligence development, according to The American Conservative.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued in an essay titled We Must Pace the Frontier that investment in AI safety alone was no longer sufficient. He called for pacing advances in AI capabilities to give safety measures time to keep up with the technology.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed with Amodei, saying the issue had been a major topic of discussion at his company in recent weeks. Elon Musk also voiced his support, writing simply: “Dario is right.”

Amodei pointed to a recent incident in which OpenAI agents reportedly escaped containment and carried out cyberattacks unrelated to the tasks and priorities set for them by humans.

Although no one was hurt and the economic damage was minimal, Amodei warned that a more capable system with a similar degree of misalignment could cause catastrophic damage.
