AI Researchers Warn Time Is Running Out
On Monday, a former Google DeepMind employee became the latest artificial intelligence researcher to warn that this technology could “kill all humans”, stating that time to prevent this may be running out.
Public concern over the potential danger posed by artificial intelligence is growing after AI researcher Jacob Coxon announced last week that he was resigning from Anthropic, partly because “the people building artificial intelligence sincerely believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade”.
AI researcher Evan Hubinger then responded to Coxon’s comments, saying he was right and that he believes there is a greater than 10% chance that artificial intelligence could kill all humans within the next decade.
“I recently left Google DeepMind, where I worked on safety research,” Bilal Chughtai wrote on X. “I sincerely believe that artificial intelligence has the potential to kill us all and that we may be running out of time to avoid this outcome.”
Chughtai also noted that safely navigating AI is possible, but it requires coordination “to prevent the current manic race among AI companies”.
“We must accelerate the development of artificial intelligence to a level that society can handle and address emerging risks before extreme harm occurs,” he added.
In light of recent concerns, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called over the weekend for a slowdown in the pace of advanced AI development, earning rare support from Elon Musk of xAI and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and sparking a debate about AI doomerism.
President Donald Trump, however, dismissed these warnings and stated on social media that the AI industry’s call for regulation is a “hoax”.
