Tehran Rejects Talks with US After Trump Remarks

On Tuesday, Tehran rejected negotiations with the United States until Washington meets Iran’s conditions. The statement came in response to US President Donald Trump, who had expressed openness to reaching an agreement with Tehran.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, urged Iranians not to be distracted by what he described as conflicting signals from the US president, saying Trump had shifted from rejecting negotiations to expressing a willingness to talk.

“The situation regarding oil and the straits has changed. Efforts to limit the consequences will not stop what is coming. No negotiations until Iran’s conditions are met,” he wrote on social media.

On Monday, Trump said Iran wanted to reach a deal quickly and urgently. He said he would decide whether the US would become involved, while leaving the possibility open. Yet as recently as last month, he had indicated that he was no longer interested in reaching a deal or negotiating with Tehran.

Iran has previously demanded war reparations, the lifting of sanctions, an end to the blockade of its ports and the release of frozen Iranian assets as conditions for ending its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
