Zelensky Names Acting Prosecutor General

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Anton Kovalsky as acting prosecutor general, according to a decree published on Thursday. The 42-year-old lawyer has headed the prosecutor’s office in the Khmelnytskyi region since July 2025.

Earlier this week, Zelensky dismissed his predecessor, Ruslan Kravchenko, after parliament approved his removal on Tuesday. Kravchenko had submitted his resignation on 7 September amid an investigation by Ukraine’s anti-corruption authorities into alleged corruption involving officials in his office.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) allege that a senior official in the Prosecutor General’s Office led a criminal group that took bribes in exchange for protecting fraudulent call centers and laundered millions in criminal proceeds.

Kravchenko denies any involvement and has not been charged or formally named as a suspect in the case.

He subsequently accused NABU director Semen Kryvonos of falsifying documents and arranging a fictitious adoption in 2009 to obtain an amnesty. Kravchenko also claimed that the anti-corruption investigation was intended to gain access to criminal cases involving NABU and SAPO officials.

NABU and SAPO have rejected his accusations, describing them as part of a systematic attack on Ukraine’s independent anti-corruption institutions.
