A Toddler with Severe Brain Damage Was Euthanized

In the Netherlands, authorities have recorded the first known case of active euthanasia of a child younger than 12 under legislation that took effect in 2024. The child, who was nearly two years old, was born in the 26th week of pregnancy and suffered from severe brain damage, German outlet Idea reported.

The child had progressive motor impairments, epileptic seizures, visual impairments and respiratory problems. According to the Dutch review committee, the child's suffering was assessed as irreversible and with no prospect of improvement, and the child's developmental level corresponded to that of a six-week-old infant.

However, the decision-making process was marred by doubts. Independent doctors initially concluded that the suffering was not continuous and that alternatives existed in the form of palliative care or other treatments for the seizures.

The attending physician and the parents proceeded with the procedure only after obtaining a second opinion from another specialist, who confirmed that the conditions for euthanasia were met.

The case is currently being investigated by the Dutch public prosecutor's office. The Netherlands is among the countries with the most liberal legislation regarding euthanasia. In 2025, more than 10,300 people died by euthanasia in the country.
