Crocodile Habitat Chosen for 2032 Olympic Rowing

The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Australia, has been officially approved as the venue for rowing and canoe sprint at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, despite being a known crocodile habitat.

World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide endorsed the course following an independent technical assessment, which examined weather conditions, water levels and flood risks. The assessment found that the river could provide a safe, fair and consistent field of play, but did not examine the risk posed by crocodiles.

World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland said the river could provide fair competition conditions consistent with the requirements of Olympic and Paralympic rowing. Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris said future design and operational work would now focus solely on Rockhampton.

The decision has nevertheless drawn criticism. Three-time Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn has raised concerns about flooding, the fairness and integrity of competition and the experience for athletes and spectators. He also questioned the measures that could be required to deal with crocodiles, although he said they were not his main concern.

Detailed planning, design and construction of the Rockhampton venue will now proceed ahead of the 2032 Games.
