US, Denmark and Greenland Sign Military Deal

The United States, Denmark and Greenland have signed an agreement that will allow the US to significantly strengthen its military presence in Greenland, US President Donald Trump announced.

The agreement is also intended to prevent US adversaries from building military bases or making sensitive investments on the strategically important Arctic island. According to the US Department of State, the United States will gain permanent rights of access, bases and overflight, which are to remain in effect even if Greenland later becomes independent from Denmark.

"This is a dream come true for the United States of America", Trump declared. He added that the agreement has no time limit and that the US will be able to do whatever is necessary to defend Greenland and ensure its own security.

According to the Danish government, the agreement will strengthen security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the agreement respects the island's interests and "benefits us all".

Some details remain unclear, however, including whether the US will build new bases in Greenland. The United States already operates a Space Force base there.
