Germany Unveils Combat Vehicle That Can Destroy Tanks

The Bundeswehr is reinforcing its medium forces with the Schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie combat vehicle, which combines the speed of a wheeled armored vehicle with the firepower of heavier equipment.

The vehicle weighs about 40 metric tons and reaches a speed of 100 km/h. It is armed with a 30-millimeter cannon and MELLS anti-tank missiles. Sensors monitor the surroundings in 360 degrees, and an acoustic system can show the crew the direction of enemy fire.

According to army officer Pascal H., the German light infantry has never before had such a concentration of firepower.

Soldiers are already training with the first eight units. Reliability tests of the turret and weapon systems during intensive firing exercises will follow.

The vehicles are intended to replace the Wiesel light tracked vehicles and to support units capable of rapid deployment over long distances, for example to NATO's eastern flank. The concept relies on hit-and-run tactics, with drones handling initial contact with the enemy whenever possible.

Germany has ordered up to 123 vehicles for about €2.7bn ($3.1bn), including service and maintenance. A significant portion is being built in Australia based on the Australian Boxer CRV. Deliveries are scheduled to continue through 2030.
