Trump to Appoint AI Czar, Vows Not to Slow Industry

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to appoint a new adviser on artificial intelligence, referred to as the "AI czar", and to create a special "AI force". He has not yet disclosed details about how it will operate or what its powers will be.

Trump made the announcement amid growing concern among some US lawmakers about the risks of the rapid development of AI. The president, however, has long opposed more extensive regulation of the industry.

"We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry", he wrote on Truth Social. He added that he intends to address any potential harm or illegal conduct through existing criminal and civil law.

It would be Trump's second AI czar. The post was previously held by investor David Sacks, who stepped down in the spring and stayed on as an external adviser.

The announcement comes ahead of Trump's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. The US and China are competing for leadership in AI, which both countries consider crucial for the economy and national defense.
