Typhoon Dujuan Puts Tokyo Region on High Alert

Japanese authorities have raised alert levels in Tokyo and surrounding areas as Typhoon Dujuan approaches the country’s eastern coast, with forecasters warning of record rainfall, flooding and landslides.

The highest Level 5 landslide warning has been issued for Oshima in the Izu Islands south of Tokyo, while Level 4 warnings are in place in parts of the Kanto region.

The typhoon has severely disrupted transport. Hundreds of flights have been canceled, including services at Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports, while some rail services have also been suspended.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called on residents to heed evacuation orders. She is due to travel to New York, where she is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly and meet US President Donald Trump.

The typhoon has already brought heavy rain and widespread disruption to eastern Japan during the five-day Silver Week holiday. Organizers canceled Monday’s events at the Rock in Japan festival and the Tokyo Game Show.
