AfD Calls on Merz to Go to Moscow

Following its latest election successes, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has renewed calls for the governing coalition to resume dialogue with Moscow.

AfD Co-Chair Tino Chrupalla said after elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin that voters were demanding a policy of peace and diplomacy, according to Deutsche Welle.

He called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to travel to Moscow and negotiate an end to the escalation of the war in Ukraine.

Co-Chair Alice Weidel, meanwhile, stressed the need for good relations with both Russia and the US. Her comments came amid reports of a planned meeting between the AfD leadership and Putin economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev in spring 2027 to discuss the possible resumption of Russian gas supplies to Germany.

AfD foreign policy spokesman Markus Frohnmaier has also held talks with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller about restoring gas supplies.

The AfD has no authority to change Germany’s energy policy, which remains the responsibility of the federal government. Germany’s other major parties also continue to rule out forming a coalition with the AfD.
