In a recent interview, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Germany would play an active role in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.
According to Wadephul, these guarantees would have to be “very close to what NATO membership means.” This would involve comprehensive and credible protection that would have to include not only European states, but also the US and other supporters.
Wadephul also warned that Russia would always find pretexts to continue the war and avoid negotiations, including in the Russia-Ukraine-US format.
It is therefore crucial for Europe to develop its own defense capabilities. He also advocated being prepared for a possible return to conscription.
In addition, Wadephul called for Germany to reduce its dependence on China for the supply of critical raw materials such as rare earths. Excessive dependence could become a significant security risk in the future.
