Ukraine receives missiles from the US and Europe pays, Zelensky announces
As part of a new financing program agreed between the US and its European allies under the name Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), Ukraine has secured over $2 billion for American weapons. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday.
He expects the total volume of pledged funds to reach $3.5 billion in October. NATO allies hope to provide $10 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine. The PURL initiative provides a mechanism whereby Europe pays and the US delivers.
The first two deliveries, worth $500 million each, will “definitely include missiles for Patriot and HIMARS systems,” Zelensky said. According to Patrick Turner, NATO's top representative in Ukraine, the first four packages financed through PURL are already on their way to Ukraine.
Ukraine is heavily reliant on Western long-range air defense systems to shoot down Russian missiles. The country is also preparing for winter, as authorities expect Russia to intensify its attacks on energy infrastructure.
