United Kingdom: Recognition of Palestine should be part of a broader peace process
British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said on Sunday that recognition of the Palestinian state alone could not become a reality “overnight.” In his opinion, it must be part of a broader peace process.
“Any move towards recognition is only meaningful if it maintains the prospect of a two-state solution,” he told Sky News. He added that Prime Minister Keir Starmer would decide later that day whether Britain would recognize Palestine.
Starmer had already announced in July that London would take this step if Israel did not agree to a ceasefire with Hamas, did not allow further humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, did not stop its plans to annex the West Bank, and did not commit to the peace process.
Lammy pointed out that the situation had only worsened since that statement. The ceasefire agreement had failed, and Israel was continuing with its settlement plans.
