Tragedy in a church in Michigan. Several shooting victims and fire reported
Shortly after 5 p.m. local time, a shooting occurred at the Jesuit church in Grand Blanc, Michigan. According to local police, several people were injured. The shooter was killed.
A man in his 40s from Burton, Michigan, killed at least one person, but authorities believe there are more victims under the rubble. President Donald Trump wrote that the shooting “appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America” and that “the epidemic of violence must be stopped immediately.”
In addition, a fire broke out in the building, which is being extinguished by the fire department. Footage from social media shows thick smoke and emergency responders working at the burning church.
Police said there was no further danger to the public but urged residents to avoid the area. Authorities have not yet released further details, including the identity of the perpetrator, the number of injured, or the possible motive.
Preliminary information suggests that the suspect rammed his vehicle into the church door and began shooting after getting out.
The incident occurred in the city of Grand Blanc, about 100 kilometers northwest of Detroit. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is informally known as the Mormons.
