Putin proposed maintaining nuclear restrictions even after the treaty expires. The US has remained silent so far
Russia is still waiting for US President Donald Trump's response to Vladimir Putin's proposal that both countries voluntarily adhere to the limits on the number of deployed strategic nuclear weapons even after the New START treaty expires in 2026.
According to Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, the United States has not yet responded officially. He said it was obvious that the US government had been busy with the UN General Assembly and other priorities, but Moscow was still waiting for a response.
New START, signed in 2010, is the last remaining nuclear arms control agreement between the US and Russia.
Its expiration without a replacement would mean that there would be no formal control of arsenals between the two largest nuclear powers – which, according to experts, increases the risk of escalation and mistrust.
