Merkel: AfD divides society and violates the spirit of the Basic Law

Angela Merkel sharply criticized the AfD party in an interview with ZDF. She described it as “inhumane” and accused it of promoting hatred, racism, and social division.

According to Merkel, the AfD divides people into “elites and the people” and determines for itself “who still belongs to the people.”

“That is simply against the Basic Law. It states that all power emanates from the people. And the people are all German citizens.”

She emphasized that even frustration with the country's development is no reason to support inhuman policies. At the same time, Merkel called the reunification of Germany a “great stroke of luck” and reminded listeners that, despite all the problems, it was a historic opportunity for freedom.

She also criticized the selection of speakers at the celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of reunification, saying that someone from eastern Germany or Eastern Europe should have spoken, as this region had played a key role in the reunification process.
