Brussels plans to promote the development of autonomous cars in Europe
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a pan-European effort to develop autonomous vehicles. In her view, artificial intelligence could boost the stagnating automotive sector and at the same time increase road safety.
In a speech at Italian Tech Week in Turin, she emphasized the need for an “AI first” strategy in the field of mobility. Autonomous cars are already a reality in the US and China, she said, and Europe must not fall behind.
She proposed creating a network of cities for testing such vehicles, which 60 Italian mayors have already expressed interest in. According to her, the European Commission will support the development of cars that are “made in Europe and designed for European roads.”
At a time when European manufacturers are struggling with foreign competition, Brussels is looking for ways to strengthen technological sovereignty. Among other things, AI could reduce traffic jams, connect remote regions, and secure jobs.
Von der Leyen emphasized that the future of the European automotive industry must be shaped in Europe.
