European Commission investigates suspected Hungarian espionage

The European Commission has announced that it has set up a working group to investigate allegations of Hungarian espionage against European institutions. The information comes from independent research by the Hungarian journalist organization Direkt36, the Belgian newspaper De Tijd, and the German magazine Der Spiegel.

The Commission takes such allegations very seriously and plans to investigate whether the Hungarian secret service has been specifically monitoring European Union employees.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated during a committee meeting in the European Parliament that he was not aware of any such cases and described the allegations as unfounded.

According to the report, Hungarian agents operated under diplomatic cover in Brussels and attempted to gain the trust of employees of European institutions.
