Soldiers in Madagascar rebel, president warns of coup attempt

Tensions are rising in Madagascar. President Andry Rajoelina faces his biggest challenge since his re-election – elite soldiers from the CAPSAT unit have supported the youth protests that began in September.

The demonstrations, inspired by citizens' initiatives in Kenya and Nepal, broke out due to chronic water and electricity shortages, but gradually took on a political dimension.

The demonstrators are demanding Rajoelina's resignation, an apology for the crackdown, and the dissolution of the Senate and the Electoral Commission. The government claims that this is an attempt to seize power by force.

Videos have appeared on social media showing soldiers urging their colleagues to side with the people.
Several members of CAPSAT escorted demonstrators to the center of Antananarivo, which had previously been inaccessible.

The UN counts 22 victims, but the government admits to only 12. The president called for calm and dialogue, as did the prime minister and army leadership.
