The EU wants the Americans to lift tariffs on steel and aluminum products
The European Commission has called on the United States to lift tariffs on steel products, which are currently hindering the full implementation of the EU-US customs agreement.
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič pointed out that Brussels had already fulfilled its part of the agreement by proposing an increase in steel tariffs to 50 percent, a reduction in quotas, and clarification of the origin of the steel.
However, the US continues to impose 50 percent tariffs not only on steel and aluminum, but also on 407 categories of products made from these metals, including refrigerators, motorcycles, and wind turbines.
The EU is calling for an end to the practice of determining the proportion of steel in finished products. Šefčovič said that the EU's proposal had similar parameters to the American system for protecting the domestic market and that he had already sent a letter with this request to his American partners.
