German MP claims he was spied on. He has filed a complaint against Viktor Orbán

German MEP Daniel Freund, a well-known critic of the Hungarian government, has reported Viktor Orbán for attempted cyber espionage ahead of the European elections.

According to the Politico website, an unknown attacker posing as a Ukrainian student attempted to infect Freund's device with spyware via a suspicious email, which IT experts believe may have been used by the Hungarian secret service.

The link in the message was supposed to lead to spyware from the Israeli company Candiru, which is on the US blacklist.

Freund claims that the government in Budapest could be behind the incident and speaks of an “unworthy attack on the European Parliament.”

The public prosecutor's office in Germany has launched an investigation, including a forensic analysis and the questioning of witnesses. The Hungarian government has not yet commented on the case.

Freund setzt sich seit langem für eine härtere Haltung der EU gegenüber Ungarn ein – einschließlich der Einfrierung von EU-Geldern und der Kritik an der ungarischen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft.
