Orbán plans meeting with Trump – he wants to restore the “golden era” of relations

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that he would soon be meeting with US President Donald Trump. Negotiations on an economic agreement between the US and Hungary are already largely prepared.

Orbán, a long-time ally of the American president, hopes to restore the so-called “golden era” of relations from the Trump administration.

Also on the negotiating table is a possible restoration of the tax agreement that the US revoked in 2022. Despite tensions in bilateral relations—particularly in connection with Budapest's stance on China and its energy dependence on Russia—Orbán is signaling a willingness to deepen cooperation.

Although he has not yet met Trump in person, the two have a close relationship and share similar views, particularly on the issue of migration. Orbán also sees Hungary's recent reinstatement into the visa waiver program as a positive signal from Washington.
