MI5: Artificial intelligence without oversight could pose a threat to security
The director of the British secret service MI5, Ken McCallum, warned that artificial intelligence systems without human control could pose a security risk in the future. In a speech on the risks to the United Kingdom, he emphasized that the country is not currently facing scenarios like those in science fiction films, but that ignoring the dangers would be irresponsible.
McCallum explained that artificial intelligence makes the work of security services more efficient, while terrorist groups use it to spread propaganda and monitor targets. According to him, state actors also use AI for cyberattacks and to influence elections.
According to the MI5 chief, security institutions must prepare today for the possibility that autonomous systems could emerge in the future that act without human supervision. McCallum emphasized that it was not his job to spread panic, but to find real solutions to protect the country from new forms of threats.
