France and Britain propose UN mission to stabilize the Gaza Strip

France and Great Britain, together with the United States, are finalizing a draft resolution for the UN Security Council that would create the legal basis for future international stabilization forces in the Gaza Strip.

Even though this will not be a classic UN peacekeeping mission, the goal is to obtain a mandate that would enable the deployment of troops and legitimize their presence in the region.

Among the countries willing to contribute is Indonesia, which has already offered 20,000 soldiers. Paris and London are coordinating with the US on a proposal to create a legal framework inspired by the model used in Haiti.

However, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned that the process would be difficult and time-consuming.

International negotiations have intensified following the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Currently, there are only a few US soldiers in the region acting as coordinators.

The proposal is based on an earlier statement by the UN General Assembly supporting the establishment of a transitional mission in the Gaza Strip as part of efforts to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
