Hamas allegedly wants to break ceasefire, US has “credible information”

The US State Department announced on Saturday that it had informed the countries guaranteeing the ceasefire in Gaza of “credible information” indicating that Hamas would break the ceasefire.

“Should Hamas proceed with this (planned) attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire,” the department said in a statement.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been in effect since Friday, October 10, and is the result of diplomatic efforts by the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

Despite the optimism and statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about a “new beginning,” Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis. There is a large amount of unexploded ordnance in the region. It is estimated that 300,000 tents are needed to house 1.5 million displaced Palestinians.
