The US is not currently planning any nuclear explosions, claims the energy minister
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright assured that the nuclear tests currently planned will not involve actual explosions. These are merely so-called non-critical tests, in which the functionality of other parts of nuclear weapons is checked without an actual explosion.
The aim is to test new systems and ensure that the replacement weapons are more effective than the previous ones. Wright also pointed out that, thanks to many years of testing and advanced simulations, the United States has sufficient data to accurately analyze the effects of a nuclear explosion.
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump called for the resumption of nuclear testing after more than three decades ahead of his planned meeting with Xi Jinping.
However, this was apparently more of a geopolitical signal to China and Russia than an actual return to the explosions of the Cold War era.
