US President Donald Trump is offering Ukraine a security guarantee similar to NATO's Article 5 - an attack on Ukraine would be considered an attack on the entire transatlantic community. The guarantee would last for ten years and the US, together with its European partners, could respond with military force.
According to Axios, the proposal, which was handed to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky by the US envoy, includes lines for the EU, NATO and Russia to sign, in addition to Ukraine and the US. Moscow has been briefed on the plan, but it is uncertain whether President Vladimir Putin's signature will ultimately be required.
In exchange for this guarantee, however, Ukraine would have to agree to a number of painful compromises - including handing over the entire Donbas, freezing the lines of control in Kherson and Zaporizhzhya oblasts, and creating a demilitarized zone.
The Ukrainian army would have to be reduced to 600 thousand soldiers and NATO troops would not be allowed on its territory. The proposal also includes an amnesty for Russia for war crimes.
