Russian accused of running spy network in Poland, paid rewards in cryptocurrencies

Polish prosecutors have charged a 28-year-old Russian, Mikhail Mirgorodsky, in absentia with running a network of saboteurs and spies who, according to the investigation, carried out operations on behalf of the Russian FSB. The group had about 30 members.

The group was active in 2023, when it planned sabotage, arson attacks and the dissemination of propaganda. Members communicated through encrypted Telegram channels and paid themselves rewards in cryptocurrencies.

Charges also include funding criminal activity through cryptocurrency exchanges and an attempted train derailment two years ago. The group consisted mainly of Ukrainians and Belarusians, but also included Russians, a Pole and a Lithuanian. So far, 16 people have been arrested and eight other defendants are either in custody or on the run. Authorities are still searching for six more suspects.

Poland says it is facing hybrid warfare from Russia and Belarus, including sabotage and cyber attacks. Last month, it closed the last Russian consulate and deployed troops to protect its infrastructure. Moscow has not yet responded to the new allegations.
