Trump invited Peter to the White House, after previously threatening him with military action
Just a few days after harsh criticism and threats against Colombia, US President Donald Trump has now changed his tone – after a phone call with President Gustavo Petro, he announced that a visit to the White House is being prepared.
In a post on social media, Trump praised Petro's initiative and described their conversation as constructive. According to the Colombian side, the phone call was cordial and respectful.
Relations between the leaders have been tense since Trump's return to the White House in 2025, when the US revoked Petro's visa and imposed sanctions. At the time, Trump accused the Colombian government of supporting cocaine smuggling and called Petro a "sick man."
The reconciliation came against the backdrop of US attacks on smuggling ships, which claimed more than 100 lives, and Petro's sharp criticism of US policy in Gaza.
