Pope calls for a world without anti-Semitism and persecution

On Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV called for an end to anti-Semitism around the world and, on the occasion of the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day, prayed for a world without prejudice and racism.

"On this annual occasion of painful remembrance, I ask Almighty God for the gift of a world without anti-Semitism and without prejudice, oppression, or persecution of any human being," he said.

The first American pope appealed to world leaders "to remain ever vigilant so that the horror of genocide never again affects any nation."

He was referring to Tuesday's International Holocaust Remembrance Day, established by the United Nations. Relations between the Catholic Church and Judaism have improved in recent decades after centuries of hostility.

Like his predecessor Pope Francis, Lev has condemned anti-Semitism several times since taking office in May last year.
