Israel to open Rafah crossing to Egypt, Gaza to remain under surveillance

After almost a year, Israel is set to reopen the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, but this time only for pedestrians and under strict security conditions. According to available information, Palestinians will be subject to checks, and Israel and Egypt will limit the number of people who can cross the border.

Israel occupied the crossing in May 2024, cutting off the main escape route from Gaza, which was previously used mainly by the wounded and sick seeking treatment abroad.

The reopening of the crossing is part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump's peace plan, which brokered an October truce between Israel and Hamas.

However, the situation in Gaza remains extremely tense. Approximately two million people are living in makeshift conditions, and Israel continues to ban foreign journalists from entering.

At the same time, doubts remain as to whether Hamas will disarm, as fighting and air strikes continued even after the ceasefire was concluded.
