NATO set to discuss strengthening Greenland's security

NATO defense ministers are likely to discuss strengthening Greenland's security next week, British Defense Minister John Healey said.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated in recent weeks that he wants to acquire this strategic territory and has criticized European allies for failing to secure it adequately.

His comments have caused tension between the United States and Denmark, which owns Greenland, and have caused a stir within the North Atlantic Alliance. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte tried to calm the situation by confirming that he had discussed with Trump the possibilities of jointly strengthening security in the Arctic.

Healey noted that one possibility is the planned NATO mission called Arctic Sentry, aimed at increasing vigilance in the Arctic region. According to him, this is a way for the United States to reassure NATO that it is already actively responding to security challenges in the Greenland area. He expects the topic to be discussed at the NATO defense ministers' meeting on February 12 in Brussels.
