According to Rheinmetall, Europe has enough fuel reserves to last three months of war.

Europe has a total of around 60 refineries, which, according to Sheny Britzen, manager of Rheinmetall, one of the largest manufacturers of military equipment and weapons in Germany and Europe, form the backbone of fuel supplies and the basis of defense readiness.

In an interview with NTV, she warned that in the event of war, supplies for tanks, aircraft, ships, and hospitals would be depleted within a few weeks. According to her, European reserves are sufficient for three months of conflict.

Rheinmetall therefore plans to create a Europe-wide network of self-sufficient energy islands where green hydrogen would be produced using electrolysers. According to Britzen, this would overcome the vulnerability associated with dependence on conventional fuels.

Sunfire, a company specializing in industrial electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen and syngas, points out that a liter of synthetic kerosene costs four to five euros. This complicates the expansion of production, so it expects government support.

According to Britzen, attacks on energy infrastructure are a key factor in the war in Ukraine, and Russia has already lost 15 percent of its refining capacity. Last year, NATO said that Russia could be ready to attack within five years. According to Rheinmetall, it is possible to build the necessary green hydrogen capacity within this timeframe, as the technology is available and scalable.
