Russia questions Trump’s Board of Peace and its UN role
Russia has questioned how the proposed Board of Peace put forward by US President Donald Trump would function and how it would cooperate with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Moscow argues that the UNSC has remained the only universally recognised authority for maintaining international peace since the end of the Second World War.
Trump presented the idea of the body last September in connection with the war in Gaza. He later suggested it should also address other global conflicts – responsibilities that traditionally fall within the remit of the United Nations.
According to Russian diplomat Kirill Logvinov, the board’s charter is framed as an alternative to ‘ineffective mechanisms’, raising questions about its relationship to existing structures. Moscow also noted that UN Secretary-General António Guterres has not yet been invited to its meetings.
According to the draft document, the board is to act in accordance with international law, but Trump, as chairman, would wield significant powers, including a veto.
