Spain and Ukraine deepen defence ties amid ongoing war

Spain will continue to support Ukraine despite growing international focus on the conflict in the Middle East, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has said. He stressed that the war in the region must not distract from Russia’s aggression and that Madrid would maintain its level of support for Kyiv.

During the visit, Spain and Ukraine signed agreements on cooperation in the production of military equipment, including drones, radar systems and missiles. The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the aim was to strengthen air defence in particular and expand production capacity, with Spanish technology firms involved in the projects.

Zelenskyy also expressed hope that EU leaders would back a €90 billion package to support Ukraine’s military needs and the functioning of the state. He criticised Hungary’s obstruction and said there was no alternative to continued support for Kyiv.
