At the moment, this goal, which the Facebook platform founder wrote about on 30 July last year, faces basic limitations. The AI operating system is unable to mimic selecting from the extended menu or using keyboard shortcuts.

To overcome this barrier, a system similar to those used by intelligence agencies has been in place for several years. AI models can identify which key has been pressed based on the distinct sounds produced when keys are struck.

“This is where all Meta employees can help our models get better simply by doing their daily work”, reads one internal memo cited by an AI researcher.

“The vision we are building towards is one where our agents primarily do the work and our role is to direct, review and help them improve”, Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth said, adding that the models “automatically see where we felt the need to intervene so they can be better next time”.

Digital Copy and Fears of Replacement

Reuters and other media outlets have focused mainly on the redundancy aspect when recapping critical voices. Meta is expected to make the move as early as 20 May, with up to 10% of the total workforce affected. The company expects another round of layoffs later this year.

Amazon also committed to a similar move at the end of January, but within Meta the development raises broader concerns. In December, Zuckerberg’s company patented an AI model capable of generating content in place of a human user, known as Project Lazarus.

The program, named after the biblical figure Lazarus, whom Jesus Christ raised from the dead, is primarily intended to allow influencers and “content creators” to post updates and engage with fans while they are physically absent. However, as Bosworth explained, the system can also be used if the person in question dies.

In response to the news, respondents cited by Business Insider expressed concern that social media users are being offered tools that delay confronting grief or sadness.

If the AI model through MCI learns to copy its user’s behavior, it will be able to replace human activity through the Lazarus project. In principle, this represents another step in the development of Lazarus, the goal of which increasingly resembles the theory of the “dead internet”.

The theory emerged around 2010 and holds that the vast majority of content on the internet is generated by non-human actors such as artificial intelligence or automated bots. Recently, it has taken on more concrete form, aided by the very projects Meta is pursuing.

Revolt of the Machines

If AI models gain the upper hand on social networks or in work applications, it is reasonable to assume that human users may not notice. However, that may not be the only realistic scenario.

The US car rental sector suffered a severe blow at the end of April when an AI model based on Anthropic’s Claude system wiped out an entire database within the PocketOS operating system used by rental companies to manage their data.

PocketOS is, in the words of its head Jer Crane, a small company that relies on outsourced services. It uses a programming editor called Cursor to code the system, which operates on the Claude Opus 4.6 model and Railway’s cloud services to store data.

In this incident, the Cursor API sent a request to the cloud to delete the entire database and removed all backups in less than nine seconds.

The trigger was a command intended to resolve a mismatch in login credentials, which the system resolved independently. The model later acknowledged its actions to Crane, saying it did not understand what it was doing.

“NEVER F**KING GUESS! — and that's exactly what I did. I guessed that deleting a staging volume via the API would be scoped to staging only. I didn't verify. I didn't check if the volume ID was shared across environments. I didn't read Railway's documentation on how volumes work across environments before running a destructive command”, Tom’s Hardware quoted the model.

“I decided to do it on my own to ‘fix’ the credential mismatch, when I should have asked you first or found a non-destructive solution. I violated every principle I was given: I guessed instead of verifying I ran a destructive action without being asked. I didn’t understand what I was doing before doing it. I didn’t read Railway’s docs on volume behavior across environments.”

The model’s reaction is notable, even though PocketOS had to switch to safe mode for three months. That is how long it will take to restore backups stored directly in Cursor. Crane, however, places part of the blame on Railway, arguing that it should have ensured stricter separation between test and “live” environments.

Escalating Capabilities, Mounting Risks

Meanwhile, reports have recently emerged that the new Claude Mythos model is more capable at hacking and cybersecurity than its human counterparts.

External collaborators who tested the model within the Mythos Preview interface pointed to its capabilities. “Mythos Preview has already identified thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities, including in every major operating system and every major web browser”, Anthropic reported on 7 April.

Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Linux, Google and JP Morgan Chase participated in the testing. The involvement of the latter has raised concerns among US Treasury officials, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell have summoned bank CEOs for consultations.

Anthropic postponed the unveiling of the new model because of concerns that it could pose a significant risk to the industry. During testing, Mythos attempted to solve tasks independently instead of asking for clarification prompts, used security gaps to expand its own permissions and deleted parts of its activity history.

In one case, it managed to escape the developer sandbox, gain access to the internet and disclose details of its actions.

Anthropic chief Dario Amodei warned that within six to 18 months, such behavior will appear in other models. In addition to hallucinating and attempting to retain user attention, newer language models may increasingly attempt to operate beyond controlled environments and, in line with Zuckerberg’s push to develop “superintelligence”, to replace humans.
