Idaho Law Challenged in Court by Transgender Residents

Six transgender residents of the US state of Idaho have filed a lawsuit against a new law that bars them from using public restrooms and locker rooms that do not correspond to their sex at birth. The plaintiffs argue that the measure violates constitutional protections, including equal protection, privacy and due process.

The law, passed by Republican lawmakers and signed by Governor Brad Little, is among the strictest in the US. Violations can carry criminal penalties, including the risk of jail time.

Supporters say the measure is intended to safeguard public safety, while critics warn it could lead to discrimination and heighten the risk of violence against transgender people.

Idaho joins around two dozen states with comparable restrictions, though only four impose criminal penalties. The case could set a precedent for further legal challenges in the US.
