EU Warns US Over Repeated Trade Deal Violations
Bernd Lange, chairman of the European Parliament's trade committee, has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump's decision to raise tariffs on car imports from the EU to 25%, announced on Friday. Lange described the move as confirmation that the United States is behaving like an unreliable trading partner.
He called Trump's actions unacceptable, warning that such an approach undermines trust between close allies. Lange recalled that the EU had been adhering to the framework trade agreement concluded last year in Scotland, which was intended to prevent an escalation of the trade conflict.
He also pointed to repeated US breaches of the agreement, citing tariffs imposed on hundreds of products containing steel and aluminum.
The EU, he said, was ready to respond clearly and firmly, drawing on its economic strength. His remarks suggest that tensions in transatlantic trade relations may continue to rise.
