Sweden Intercepts Suspected Russian “Shadow Fleet” Tanker in Baltic Sea
The Swedish coastguard has intercepted a tanker suspected of links to Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea. The vessel, Jin Hui, sailing under the Syrian flag, was stopped in Swedish territorial waters south of Trelleborg.
Authorities have launched an investigation on suspicion of breaches of maritime regulations, particularly concerning the vessel’s seaworthiness. The coastguard said discrepancies in the ship’s registration suggest it may be operating under a false flag. The tanker is also listed under European Union and UK sanctions.
Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said the vessel is likely part of a Russian network used to circumvent sanctions and finance the war in Ukraine.
European countries have stepped up enforcement measures against such vessels in recent months. Sweden has already intercepted several ships suspected of violations this year.
